KM Advanced Art class tours

master works in Minneapolis

On Wednesday, May 7th, Advanced Art class along with their art teacher, Marilyn Fredrickson took a field trip to the Twin Cities to view master works of art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, and sculpture garden. The day started with an hour guided tour of the special exhibit of Henri Matisse, masterworks from the Baltimore Museum of Art at MIA.

The guide provided information about how two sisters, Claribel and Etta Cone traveled to Paris in the late 19th and early 20th century and were able to purchase hundreds of paintings created by Matisse, Manet, Gauguin, Cezanne, Seurat, and Degas and brought them back to America.

The exhibit had special meaning to the students since they had studied Matisse’s paintings and created their own painting similar to one of his themes of an interior room containing a window with a view. Cody Dufner commented, “Seeing the actual paintings puts you in the same environment space of the actual artist. To be able to see the painting, you are viewing the actual colors and size which textbooks or computer images don’t convey-it is awesome.” Alex Ferson stated that he was surprised to learn how much work Matisse put into his paintings by preparing and creating numerous sketches before he started his compositions on canvas.

After MIA, art students left for a self-guided tour of the Walker Sculpture Garden where a group picture was taken. At the Walker Art Center students viewed the special assembled work of American artist, Edward Hopper: A Painter’s Process. Brianna Berghuis said “Edward Hopper’s collection of art really appealed to me. I was able to stand in front of my favorite painting, Morning in a City. The way he uses highlights and shading to create depth amazes me.”

Rachel Bernards summed up the feelings of the students. “Going to the museums was beneficial to see the pre-sketches, and different thought process of the artist. At the museum you feel connected to the artist and their work.”
