Kyle Huneke excited to take on new challenge as activities director
•by Randy Carlsen
As the new K-M activities director Kyle Huneke is working in familiar territory. He is a Goodhue graduate and for the past few years has been volunteer assistant for the K-M wrestling team. Huneke is the former RCTC activities coordinator and in accepting this position said, "I wanted another challenge".
Kyle played football and wrestled at Goodhue. Wrestling co coach Paul Mann is also a Goodhue graduate and wrestler so that was another K-M connection.
After graduating Kyle served in the U.S. Navy four years. He was a flight deck supervisor on the U.S.S. George Washington in Norfolk, VA. After being honorably discharged from the Navy he worked as a athletic equipment manager at RCTC for a year-and-a-half. He attended Augsburg College with the intent of majoring in elementary education and psychology and completed college with a degree in business management.
Kyle was then hired as the RCTC activities coordinator. RCTC has 10 team sports. He would take teams to national tournaments or club team events. Kyle also had the title of student life coordinator which encompassed 31 social and academic clubs and acted as an advisor to the student senate.
A first hand experience at K-M as a volunteer wrestling coach enabled Kyle to learn more about the other aspects of the district. "I knew this was a good school. They have good programs, athletic and academic, and I like the area," said Kyle.
By the time Kyle officially started as activities director he had already met most of the coaches and is in the process of figuring out the scheduling. Another objective is to meet with all the booster clubs.
Kyle replaces Aaron Wilke who will go back into the classroom and teach in the middle school. Wilke's last act as activities director was making arrangements for the baseball team at state. With the team bringing home the first baseball team title in school history Aaron was able to leave the position on a very positive note.
Kyle Huneke would like to be able to coordinate more of the same. His early experiences with staff, students and administration lead him to believe athletic and academic successes will continue.
