Wildcats girls back in title game with Lakeville North
• by Randy Carlsen
To many of the Dodge County Wildcats girls who played in the section championship for the first time in the sport’s history at K-M the 3-2 loss probably seems like just yesterday. Lakeville North scored a pair of third period goals to pull out the win.
Thursday night the Wildcats will have another shot at Lakeville North following their 8-2 won over Farmington Saturday night at the Dodge County Ice Arena. Lakeville North shut out Lakeville South 2-0 to set up the 5 p.m. rematch at the Owatonna Ice Arena.
Will Dodge County be intimidated by a school that has over 1,700 students in their top three grades? Probably not. Coach Jeremy Gunderson believes this is a great opportunity for a small school program in southeast Minnesota. Schools from the south tend to get very little respect when it comes to high school hockey-boys or girls.
"The girls know what it takes and we're going to give them a couple of different looks," said Gunderson. "We need to take care of business."
Saturday night the Wildcats took control early when Dana Rasmssen scored the first goal 10 seconds into the game. Bella Wagner assisted on the goal. Then it was Rasmussen returning the favor by assisting on a Wagner goal to give Dodge County a 2-0 lead and send them on their way for second consecutive trip to the section final.
The Wildcats out shot Farmington 22-8 and added four more goals, three of them compliments of Darby Dodds. Dodds popped one into the back of the net to make it a 3-0 game and then it was Rasmussen's turn once again. Rasmussen and Jacie Hoehn assisted on the first goal of the period and then it was Dodds and Wagner on the second goal.
Farmington finally broke the ice midway through the period to make it a 4-1 game, but the Wildcats snuffed out any chance of a comeback by scoring a pair of goals before the end of the period. Dodds scored (Rasmussen and Hoehn assisting) and she added another goal with Rasmussen and Wagner assisting on the next one to make it a 6-1 game. Scoring a hat trick for the game is quite an accomplishment, but the K-M senior did it in one period.
Farmington closed to within 6-2 in the third. Then Dodge County shut the door and put an explanation point on this game by scoring the final two of the game. Rasmussen scored (Hollywood Hermanson assisting) and Dodds added a fourth goal (Bella Wagner assisting) to cap off a spectacular ...PURCHASE DCI FOR FULL STORY
