Baker & Borgstrom-Durst Accounting-Good Decisions All Around
In 1974 Janice Borgstrom-Durst started working for accountant Bob Shadow in his main street Kasson office. Renee Jensen came on board in the late 70’s and in 1984 Janice and Renee purchased the business from Bob. Danette Baker originally started her career as a medical secretary at the Mayo Clinic. Danette had the goal of becoming a CPA. She went back to school and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and passed the CPA exam. In 2003 she also became a licensed appraiser and began to work with her dad as a real estate appraiser. In January of 2004, she started working for Janice and Renee. At this time Renee Jensen was contemplating semi-retirement and Danette made the decision to buy into the business in November of 2005, a decision she is grateful to have made.
Both Janice and Danette are CPA’s and continue with ongoing classes. Both admit to having an affinity for numbers. “You have to in this business”, says Janice, “or you would not survive”. Both enjoy getting to know their clients and want people to realize they are there to help year round with accounting needs, including working with the IRS if necessary. They both enjoy the opportunity to “dig in” and help a customer or business get their books back on track. “We want to remove the intimidation of accounting and bookkeeping”, says Danette and that includes payroll, business accounting, income taxes, nonprofits, or whatever a client may need.
Much of Janice’s new business comes from adult children of clients and Baker & Borgstrom-Durst Accounting is accepting new business for the current tax season. They are open year round Monday through Thursday and during the busy tax season are open daily Monday through Saturday along with many evenings. Renata DuCharme provides office support and Karla Huse and Janey Fox supplement the office staff during tax season.
Janice and her husband Kenny live in rural Mantorville (known to many for their impressive Christmas light displays from past years) and have plans to move to Kasson in the next couple of years. Between them they have eight children (one deceased) and eighteen grandchildren. Danette and her husband Kurt call Kasson home and have a school age son and daughter.
Janice and Danette are glad they both made decisions that brought them to work on main street Kasson where people have the convenience of front door parking and can walk in the door year round to find two individuals willing to dive into the accounting needs of their customers. Good decisions all around!
