Tucked off the beaten path in Byron can be found a restaurant serving pizza made with only the finest ingredients. The mother daughter duo of LuAnn and Ashley Miller are focused on enticing people to try their pizza created with only quality ingredients.

The Millers purchased the restaurant (formerly Rock n’ Roll Pizza) in April of 2009. After making numerous required upgrades they opened in August 2009. They currently serve pizza with an extensive offering of toppings, a sub sandwich, salads and a garlic cheese bread made with bread from the nearby Otto’s Bakery. They make their own dough and sauce and season the meats themselves. At the present time they are rearranging the restaurant to allow for additional kitchen space which will mean an expanded menu.

LuAnn and Ashley Miller, Owners

Twenty one years ago Luann and her husband Keith purchased an empty building in Blooming Prairie not exactly sure what business it would house. Keith thought it would be a good location for a pizza place with only one obstacle. Neither had any restaurant experience to speak of. Fortunately their attorney for the transaction knew someone who sold pizza supplies. LuAnn agreed to buy the needed supplies from this person and yet still did not know how to make pizza and operate a pizza restaurant. Amazingly the supplier had a brother in western Minnesota with a pizza place and he agreed to teach LuAnn what she needed to know. For one and a half days LuAnn immersed herself in ‘Pizza 101’ and learned all that she could walking around the kitchen with a clipboard taking notes on everything and rolling up her sleeves and making pizza. She returned to Blooming Prairie, hired ten people and the Pizza Cellar was born. One of those original ten employees is still there while one of their employees from the Pizza Cellar is again working for them, this time at 2nd Street Pizza. A few years ago they sold the business to their niece and her husband who continue to operate the business.

Ashley was a mere baby in the midst of the creation of the Pizza Cellar and consequently grew up in the business with memories of napping in the kitchen. She has since had a stint in the Twin Cities attending school and working at a restaurant. She realized the metro life was not for her and next worked as a manager at a motel in Owatonna until her parents presented the idea of buying the Byron location. Ashley knew she wanted to own a business and her parents with their support are helping her accomplish that goal. The Millers have another daughter who is married and has children and does live in the Twin Cities.

At this time the restaurant employs five people along with Ashley, LuAnn and Keith who serves as a delivery man. Recently 2nd Street Pizza expanded delivery to the Kasson-Mantorville area as well as Byron. LuAnn has found the business to be primarily take out, but they can seat 52 people in house. They open at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and will open early for parties or events. LuAnn points out, “We have no franchise fees and use only quality ingredients. We are anxious to have people find us and give our pizza a try”. Ashley adds, “I knew living in the cities was not for me. We are looking forward to being part of Byron’s business community”. The next time you’re hungry for pizza, give 2nd Street Pizza a try. Call ahead for take out, stop in to dine, or call for delivery. You will be delighted to find pizza made with only the freshest and finest ingredients.
