Sueann Johnson has ink in her blood and on her hands
Sueann Johnson, owner of Dodge County Printing, knows the printing business from the inside out. In 1969 Sueann's father Harold started working for Folmer Carlsen, then owner of the Dodge County Independent Newspaper. This was back in the day of linotype and the newspaper was printed in the back of the Dodge County Independent building. In 1978 Sueann's father purchased the printing portion of the newspaper business as the newspaper was no longer printed on site. Harold ran a commercial print shop and in 2008, Harold and Marion Johnson's middle daughter purchased the business.
Sueann began her employment career at Sears in Rochester. She also worked at Montgomery Wards, the Mayo Clinic and Sam's Club for a period of time. From there, at her father's suggestion, she worked at Tri-M Graphics, a print shop in Owatonna where she learned a great deal about printing. She also served as the Dodge Center Legion manager and in 1999 when her father developed heart problems, she began helping him in the print shop. From there one thing lead to another and Sueann began to consider business ownership. Not too surprising seeing she had literally grown up in the business.
In college Sueann studied business management and marketing, but those who know her know she also has inherited her father's 'mechanical gene', something that cannot always be learned, but is helpful to have in the printing business. This combination of skills has helped her be successful in the printing field.
When asked what she would like people to know about DCP Sueann states "We're here!" referring to the location of DCP. It is located in the back of the Dodge County Newspaper office and customers enter through the same front door. More than once an individual with a puzzled look on their face has poked their head in the door looking for the print shop. Dodge County Printing offers business and personal printing, promotional products, color and black and white copies, and carries Carlson Craft social and wedding invitations. DCP is unique in that it does offset, letterpress and digital printing all at one location. Sueann likes that she is able to offer people a start to finish service. Customers can chose the paper, design, layout, etc. with Sueann running the presses to create the finished product which often times she delivers.
